The task was to choose one of five short stories. Read it, deconstruct it, and identify the key themes and opportunities for creative exploration within the text. All decorative elements were supposed to be created with use of type only and a very limited colour palette (black, white + one additional colour). I picked “The Red Room” by H. G. Wells, and since it is a horror story I decided to use red as my additional colour.
The main idea for my approach was to add a modern twist to a classical victorian novel, hence the use of simple, minimalistic form and Futura as the only font. All the pull quotes were supposed to resemble the uneasy feeling of overwhelming fear that the main character is experiencing throughout the whole story, as well as dwindling, dim candle light in dark corridors of the haunted mansion.
